Abstract

A printing apparatus for transfer printing in which a print head is moved towards and away from an inked tape and a substrate, including: a print head, and a print head actuation assembly and a controller which is configured to control the print head actuation assembly to move the print head between a first rest position, a second ready position and a third printing position, wherein the print head actuation assembly includes: a first solenoid which is connected to the print head to actuate movement of the print head between the first rest position and the second ready position, and a second solenoid which is connected to the print head to actuate movement of the print head between the second ready position and the third printing position.

Dependent claims

A printing apparatus, for transfer printing in which a print head is moved towards and away from an inked tape and a substrate, including:

a print head, and a print head actuation assembly, and
a controller which is configured to control the print head actuation assembly to move the print head between a first rest position, a second ready position and a third printing position, wherein
the print head actuation assembly includes:
a first solenoid which is connected to the print head to actuate movement of the print head between the first rest position and the second ready position, and
a second solenoid which is connected to the print head to actuate movement of the print head between the second ready position and the third printing position.

A printing apparatus, for transfer printing in which a print head is moved towards and away from an inked tape and a substrate, including:

a print head, and an actuator, and
a controller which is configured to control the movement of the print head via the actuator through a control circuit, the controller being configured to, during an initial calibration step to determine a solenoid factor:
at a first temperature, determine a current in the control circuit, and determine, based on the current, a resistance parameter relating to a resistance in the actuator at the first temperature and use the resistance parameter to calculate the solenoid factor;
and
store the solenoid factor;
wherein during operation of the printing apparatus the controller is configured to determine a present temperature in the actuator by being configured to:
determine a second current in the control circuit;
determine, based on the second current, a second resistance parameter relating to the resistance in the actuator, and
determine, using the second resistance parameter and the solenoid factor, the present temperature in the actuator.
