Barrier layer for garments and articles

An article comprising:

• a lower garment comprising:
• a shell layer with an outer surface and an inner surface opposite the outer surface, wherein the shell layer comprises a first edge and a second edge that are separable along a longitudinal length of the lower garment;
• a barrier layer attached to the inner surface of the shell layer, wherein the barrier layer comprises (i) a first portion with a first upper edge and a first lower edge, (ii) a second portion with a second upper edge attached to the first lower edge and a second lower edge, wherein the second portion comprises a different material than the first portion, and (iii) an elastic portion extending along the second lower edge;
• and
• a fastener configured to detachably secure the first edge of the shell layer and the second edge of the shell layer to form one or more leg portions of the lower garment.
