System and method for measuring loss of useable portions of crop during harvest

A loss measurement system for use in combination with a combine harvester operable to cut a crop to be harvested, separate usable portions of the crop from unusable portions of the crop, and discharge material comprising both the usable portions and the unusable portions, the system comprising:

• at least one rail mounted to a rear portion of the combine harvester;
• a collection pan configured to be slidably received on the at least one rail, the collection pan comprising:
• a receptacle portion for receiving a sample of the material discharged from the combine harvester;
• and
• a cover portion for covering the receptacle portion;
• and
• a retention system configured to retain both the receptacle portion and the cover portion of the collection pan, the retention system operable to switch between at least:
• a retain mode in which the retention system retains both the receptacle portion and the cover portion;
• and
• a partial release mode in which the retention system releases the receptacle portion and retains the cover portion, causing the receptacle portion to slide along the at least one rail and causing separation of the cover portion and the receptacle portion to allow the receptacle portion to receive the sample.
