Contextually aware management of interactive software application access

A method of managing access to an interactive software application, the method comprising:

• at a content management system:
• establishing a first credit with a first credit duration;
• providing access to the interactive software application for an interactive software application usage to a user based on the first credit duration;
• establishing a promoted content window at an end of the credit duration, the promoted content window being a period of time having a window start, a window end, and a window duration between the window start and the window end;
• before the promoted content window:
• obtaining a first promoted content hint from the interactive software application based at least partially on content of the interactive software application, and
• ignoring the first promoted content hint;
• and
• during the promoted content window:
• obtaining a second promoted content hint from the interactive software application based at least partially on content of the interactive software application,
• interpreting the second promoted content hint as a promoted content trigger event,
• suspending access to the interactive software application based on the promoted content trigger event,
• obtaining promoted audiovisual content from a promoted content server, and
• presenting the promoted audiovisual content to the user.

A system for managing access to an interactive software application, the system comprising:

• a promoted content server;
• and
• a client device including:
• a processor, and
• a hardware storage device in data communication with the processor, wherein the hardware storage device has instructions stored thereon that, when executed by the processor, cause the client device to:
• provide access on the client device to an interactive software application for an interactive software application usage to a user based on a credit duration;
• establish a promoted content window at an end of the credit duration, the promoted content window being a period of time having a window start, a window end, and a window duration between the window start and the window end;
• obtain a promoted content hint from the interactive software application based at least partially on content of the interactive software application;
• when the promoted content hint is obtained before the start of the promoted content window:
• ignore the promoted content hint, and
• continue providing access to the interactive software application;
• when the promoted content hint is obtained during the promoted content window:
• interpret the promoted content hint as a promoted content trigger event,
• suspend access to the interactive software application based on the promoted content trigger event,
• obtain promoted audiovisual content from a promoted content server, and
• present the promoted audiovisual content to the user during the suspension of access to the interactive software application;
• after presenting the promoted audiovisual content, commence access to the interactive software application;
• and
• establish a credit based at least partially on the promoted audiovisual content, wherein the credit establishes a second credit duration.
