Abstract
A method of evaluating an operation of a downhole motor implemented in a wellbore includes receiving a first set of downhole data associated with the operation of the downhole motor at a first flowrate and generating a flowrate-independent power curve for the downhole motor based on the first set of downhole data. The method further includes, based on the flowrate-independent power curve, determining a second set of downhole data associated with the operation of the motor at a second flowrate.
Claims20
A method of evaluating an operation of a downhole motor implemented in a wellbore, comprising:
- performing a drilling operation using a downhole motor operating at a first flowrate;
- while operating at the first flowrate, measuring rotational rate, pressure differential, and torque of the downhole motor;
- responsive to new flowrate at the downhole motor, identifying a desired change to one of the rotational rate or the torque;
- responsive to identifying the desired change, and using the rotational rate, the pressure differential, and the torque, generating a flowrate-independent power curve for the downhole motor;
- applying the flowrate-independent power curve to the new flowrate to identify new operating parameters for the drilling operation to achieve the desired change;
- and
- adjusting the drilling operation to the new operating parameters.
A system, comprising:
- at least one processor;
- memory in electronic communication with the at least one processor;
- and
- instructions stored in the memory, the instructions being executable by the at least one processor to:
- operate a downhole motor operating at a first flowrate during a drilling operation;
- while operating at the first flowrate, measure rotational rate, pressure differential, and torque of the downhole motor;
- responsive to new flowrate at the downhole motor, identify a desired change to one of the rotational rate or the torque;
- responsive to identifying the desired change, and using the rotational rate, the pressure differential, and the torque, generate a flowrate-independent power curve for the downhole motor;
- apply the flowrate-independent power curve to the new flowrate to identify new operating parameters for the drilling operation to achieve the desired change;
- and
- adjust the drilling operation to the new operating parameters.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including instruction that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the processor to:
- operate a downhole motor operating at a first flowrate during a drilling operation;
- while operating at the first flowrate, measure rotational rate, pressure differential, and torque of the downhole motor;
- responsive to new flowrate at the downhole motor, identify a desired change to one of the rotational rate or the torque;
- responsive to identifying the desired change, and using the rotational rate, the pressure differential, and the torque, generate a flowrate-independent power curve for the downhole motor;
- apply the flowrate-independent power curve to the new flowrate to identify new operating parameters for the drilling operation to achieve the desired change;
- and
- adjust the drilling operation to the new operating parameters.
