Various aspects of the present disclosure relate to configuring multiple modulation and coding scheme (MCS) values for a transmission. A user equipment (UE) may receive a resource assignment from a network equipment (NE). The resource assignment may include downlink control information (DCI) that allocates one or more time-frequency resources for a transmission (e.g., a transport block (TB)). The resource assignment indicates multiple MCS values corresponding to respective sets of frequency resources (e.g., resource block (RB) ranges) allocated for the transmission. For example, the resource assignment indicates multiple MCS values for a TB. The UE transmits or receives the transmission, including the TB, by applying the MCS values based on the respective sets of frequency resources.
