Wind speed and direction estimation

A method of estimating wind speed and wind direction, the method comprising:

• selecting outdoor luminaires in a geographic region, the outdoor luminaires each having a microphone unit, wherein a first outdoor luminaire of the outdoor luminaires and a second outdoor luminaire of the outdoor luminaires are located a separation distance from each other on a side of a street;
• recording, by the first outdoor luminaire, a sound and first reception time information that indicates at least a time during a reception of the sound by the first outdoor luminaire, wherein the sound is produced by a vehicle moving on the street in a driving direction;
• recording, by the second outdoor luminaire, the sound and second reception time information that indicates at least a time during a reception of the sound by the second luminaire;
• and
• estimating a component of a speed of wind in a direction that is parallel to the street based on at least the first reception time information, the second reception time information, and the separation distance.
