A self-calibrating magnetometer comprising a magnetometer, a set of Helmholtz coils, a current source, and a controller is presented. The magnetometer has three sense coils arranged to detect magnetic fields along three axes. The Helmholtz coils are arranged adjacent to the magnetometer and configured to generate magnetic fields for calibration. The current source energizes the set of Helmholtz coils with a signal that varies over time and the controller determines a calibration for the magnetometer by comparing the magnetic fields detected by the magnetometer to an expected magnetic field.
