Abstract
A friction manager may receive time data for hookload, weight-on-bit (WOB), and torque for a wellbore. A friction manager may use the time data for the hookload, the WOB, and the torque, identifying a section of steady-state motion in the wellbore. A friction manager may generate friction forces for the section of steady-state motion based on the time data for the hookload, the WOB, and the torque. A friction manager may adjust drilling activities based on the friction forces.

A method, comprising:
- performing drilling activities with a bottomhole assembly (BHA) over a length of a wellbore according to a drill plan, the drill plan including a friction model calibrated to the BHA;
- measuring, while performing the drilling activities, hookload time data and torque time data for the length of the wellbore;
- using the hookload time data and the torque time data, identifying a steady-state section within the length of the wellbore;
- using the hookload time data for the steady-state section, the torque time data for the steady-state section, recalibrating the friction model for the BHA, resulting in a recalibrated friction model;
- and
- adjusting the drilling activities based on the recalibrated friction model.
A system, comprising:
- a processor and memory, the memory including instructions that cause the processor to:
- perform drilling activities with a bottomhole assembly (BHA) over a length of a wellbore according to a drill plan, the drill plan including a friction model calibrated to the BHA;
- measure, while performing the drilling activities, hookload time data and torque time data for the length of the wellbore;
- using the hookload time data and the torque time data, identify a steady-state section within the length of the wellbore;
- using the hookload time data for the steady-state section, the torque time data for the steady-state section, recalibrate the friction model for the BHA, resulting in a recalibrated friction model;
- and
- adjust the drilling activities based on the recalibrated friction model.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium, comprising:
- a processor and memory, the memory including instructions that cause the processor to:
- perform drilling activities with a bottomhole assembly (BHA) over a length of a wellbore according to a drill plan, the drill plan including a friction model calibrated to the BHA;
- measure, while performing the drilling activities, hookload time data and torque time data for the length of the wellbore;
- using the hookload time data and the torque time data, identify a steady-state section within the length of the wellbore;
- using the hookload time data for the steady-state section, the torque time data for the steady-state section, recalibrate the friction model for the BHA, resulting in a recalibrated friction model;
- and
- adjust the drilling activities based on the recalibrated friction model.
