A treatment process for generating a composite material from a lignocellulosic material, comprising:
- (a) soaking the lignocellulosic material with a first fluid at a temperature of at least about 70° C. to dissolve at least a portion of lignin present in the lignocellulosic material to result in a soaked lignocellulosic material, wherein the first fluid comprises sodium hydroxide or sodium sulfite;
- (b) contacting the soaked lignocellulosic material with a second fluid comprising water to generate a partially delignified lignocellulosic material;
- and
- (c) compressing the partially delignified lignocellulosic material to generate the composite material.
