End tidal carbon dioxide measurement during high flow oxygen therapy

A system for capturing capnography data during high-flow oxygen therapy (HFOT), the system comprising:

• a valve, separate from an HFOT-delivery device and physically coupled to tubing of a patient interface, the valve configured to alter a flow of breathing gases delivered to a patient from the HFOT-delivery device;
• and
• a capnography monitor, separate from the HFOT-delivery device and communicatively coupled to the valve, the capnography monitor comprising:
• a processor;
• and
• memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the capnography monitor to perform a set of operations comprising:
• during delivery of the HFOT, initiating, at a first time, a temporary flow-reduction function, wherein initiating the temporary flow-reduction function causes the valve to at least partially close for a first set duration to pause or reduce the delivery of HFOT to the patient;
• capturing capnography data while the valve is at least partially closed for the first set duration;
• upon expiration of the first set duration, reopening the valve to allow the delivery of HFOT to the patient to resume;
• and
• during the resumed delivery of the HFOT, initiating, at a second time, the temporary flow reduction function, wherein initiating the temporary flow-reduction function causes the valve to at least partially close for a second set duration.

method, performed by a capnography monitor, for capturing capnography data during high-flow oxygen therapy (HFOT), the method comprising:

• receiving settings for a temporary flow-reduction function;
• during delivery of the HFOT, initiating, at a first time, the temporary flow-reduction function according to the settings for the temporary flow-reduction function, wherein initiating the temporary flow-reduction function causes a valve to at least partially close for a first set duration to reduce HFOT flow rate of gas to the patient, wherein the valve is separate from an HFOT-delivery device and physically coupled to tubing of a patient interface;
• capturing capnography data while the valve is at least partially closed for the first set duration;
• upon expiration of the first set duration, reopening the valve to allow the HFOT to resume;
• based on the capnography data, adjusting the settings for the temporary flow-reduction function;
• and
• during the resumed delivery of the HFOT, initiating, at a second time, the temporary flow reduction function according to the adjusted settings for the temporary flow-reduction function, wherein initiating the temporary flow-reduction function causes the valve to at least partially close for a second set duration.
