A system including a water heater and a computing device is disclosed. The computing device may obtain user inputs associated with a desired water heater configuration and determine a code associated with the desired water heater configuration. The computing device may further display the code. The water heater may activate a user interface of the water heater when the water heater is at least partially powered-on and render a code input screen on the user interface responsive to activating the user interface. The water heater may further obtain the code via user inputs on the code input screen. The water heater may then select a configuration file, from a plurality of configuration files, associated with the desired appliance configuration, and modify a configuration of the water heater to the desired water heater configuration by using the configuration file.
