Abstract
Electrolytic systems and methods are described for extracting lithium cation from a brine and depositing purified lithium metal onto a conductive substrate to form lithium electrodes suitable for use in lithium metal batteries. The methods allow for selective extraction of lithium ions and electroplating the extracted lithium ions as lithium metal and lithium metal alloys.
Claims23
A system for extracting a metal from an aqueous metal salt solution, the system comprising:
- (i) a first chamber comprising an organic solution,
- wherein the organic solution comprises a salt of an anion with a metal cation, and one or more coordination compounds configured to coordinate the metal cation;
- (ii) a second chamber comprising the aqueous metal salt solution;
- and
- (iii) a first membrane interposed between the organic solution in the first chamber and the aqueous metal salt solution in the second chamber,
- wherein the metal cation traverses the first membrane from the aqueous metal salt solution to the organic solution as voltage is applied;
- wherein the system is configured to remove water molecules from the organic solution.
