A surface treatment method for a sliding member. The method includes a molybdenum coating formation treatment of forming a molybdenum coating on a surface of a metal sliding portion of a sliding member that is brought into contact with another member in the presence of a lubricating oil by ejecting ejection particles made of molybdenum or a molybdenum alloy having a particle size of #100 to #800 at an ejection pressure of 0.2 MPa or higher onto the sliding portion and causing the ejection particles to impinge on the sliding portion so as to diffuse and penetrate the molybdenum in the ejection particles into the surface of the sliding portion.
