Biologically active ion-exchange polymer salts are made by exchanging biologically active ionic agents onto organic ion exchange polymers. The activated polymers are uniquely surface active for use in a wide range of antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral coatings, materials, and devices, to minimize or prevent pathogen transmission and/or infection of a susceptible individual such as a patient in a hospital. The resultant coatings, materials, and devices are the foundation of a system enabling the construction of spheres of protection, for example to protect against transmission of COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2) coronaviruses and other viral and fungal pathogens in a clinical or institutional environment, for example hospitals, community institutions, cruise ships, and long-term care facilities. The activated ion-exchange polymer salts are process stable, allowing size reduction and formulation of the resulting powders into bulk polymers or polymer precursors to produce stable, biologically active polymer composites, including antimicrobial and antiviral polymer composites.
An antiviral polymer composite material comprising a fine particulate polymer salt ionically associated with an antiviral active copper Cu(II) ion, the polymer salt dispersed within a thermoset, thermoplastic, or photocuring polymer, or a polymer lacquer, or a complex polymer composition including an emulsion, wherein the polymer or polymer composition forms a solid upon cooling, curing, or drying, wherein the antiviral active copper Cu(II) ion remains active in the solid composite after hardening, drying or curing, yielding a solid composite that possesses potent antiviral surface activity.

An antiviral medical device having a surface construction or coating comprising an antiviral polymer composite material comprising a fine particulate polymer salt ionically associated with an antiviral active copper Cu(II) ion, the polymer salt dispersed within a thermoset, thermoplastic, or photocuring polymer, or a polymer lacquer, or a complex polymer composition including an emulsion, wherein the polymer or polymer composition is applied to or incorporated within the medical device to form a solid upon cooling, curing, or drying, wherein the antiviral active ionic copper Cu(II) ion remains active in the solid composite after hardening, drying or curing upon or within the medical device surface, yielding a solid composite, or coating, at the surface of the medical device that exhibits potent antiviral surface activity.
