Abstract
Apparatuses and methods for utilizing different algal growth techniques to filter aquarium water under varying conditions, including freshwater, brackish, and saltwater, and including amounts of nutrients (including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, CO2) which vary from low to high levels. Also disclosed are embodiments to operate above water, submerged, or any combination thereof, in separate or synergistic configurations, as well as embodiments to utilize faster-growing algal species to out-compete and overgrow slower-growing species.

Hybrid chaeto reactor algal turf scrubber, comprising:
- a macroalgal containment compartment (210) defining a first water delivery structure (520), the first water delivery structure defining a first water outlet (570);
- a macroalgal attachment structure (530) contacting the macroalgal containment compartment (210), the macroalgal attachment structure defining a macroalgal attachment surface (320);
- an illumination structure (170) contacting the macroalgal containment compartment (210).
Hybrid chaeto reactor algal turf scrubber, comprising:
- a macroalgal containment compartment (210) defining a first water delivery structure (520), the first water delivery structure defining a first water outlet (570);
- a macroalgal attachment structure (530) contacting the macroalgal containment compartment (210), the macroalgal attachment structure defining a macroalgal attachment surface (320);
- an illumination structure (170) contacting the macroalgal containment compartment (210);
- a drain at a bottom of the macroalgal containment compartment (210).
Method for hybrid chaeto reactor algal turf scrubber, comprising:
- providing a macroalgal containment compartment (210) defining a first water delivery structure (520), the first water delivery structure defining a first water outlet (570);
- providing a macroalgal attachment structure (530) contacting the macroalgal containment compartment (210), the macroalgal attachment structure defining a macroalgal attachment surface (320);
- providing an illumination structure (170) contacting the macroalgal containment compartment (210);
- enabling water to flow into the first water delivery structure (520), out the first water outlet (570), into the macroalgal containment compartment (210);
- knowing if the macroalgal containment compartment (210) is inside a sump (110) with a sump water surface (155);
- if the macroalgal containment compartment (210) is inside the sump (110), then enabling an internal water surface (510) to become equal to the sump water surface (155), and enabling the illumination structure (170) to illuminate the macroalgal attachment surface (320);
- if the macroalgal containment compartment (210) is not inside the sump (110), then enabling water to flow down (305) the macroalgal attachment surface (320), and enabling the illumination structure (170) to illuminate the macroalgal attachment surface (320).
