Layer-2 networking storm control in a virtualized cloud environment

A method comprising:

• determining, by a control plane, metrics or statistics related to network traffic flow to collect from a set of network virtualization devices (NVDs) associated with Layer 2 virtual networks;
• receiving at the control plane the metrics or statistics from the set of NVDs;
• generating, by the control plane, updated storm control information, wherein the updated storm control information comprises at least one storm control policy parameter of a storm control policy, and wherein the updated storm control information is configured to cause at least one NVD of the set of NVDs to control the network traffic flow;
• identifying one or more NVDs to receive the updated storm control information;
• and
• transmitting, to each NVD of the one or more NVDs, the updated storm control information.

A system comprising:

• a control plane configured to:
• determine metrics or statistics related to network traffic flow to collect from a set of network virtualization devices (NVDs) associated with Layer 2 virtual networks;
• receive, from the set of NVDs, metrics or statistic;
• generate updated storm control information, wherein the updated storm control information comprises at least one storm control policy parameter of a storm control policy, and wherein the updated storm control information is configured to cause at least one NVD of the set of NVDs to control traffic flow;
• identify one or more NVDs to receive the updated storm control information;
• and
• transmit, to each NVD of the one or more NVDs, the updated storm control information.

One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause a control plane to perform operations comprising:

• determining metrics or statistics related to network traffic flow to collect from a set of network virtualization devices (NVDs) associated with Layer 2 virtual networks;
• receiving, from the set of NVDs, metrics or statistic;
• generating updated storm control information, wherein the updated storm control information comprises at least one storm control policy parameter of a storm control policy, and wherein the updated storm control information is configured to cause at least one NVD of the set of NVDs to control traffic flow;
• identifying one or more NVDs to receive the updated storm control information;
• and
• transmitting, to each NVD of the one or more NVDs, the updated storm control information.
