Techniques for writing overlapped fiber Bragg gratings with different reflectivities are disclosed herein. An example grating writing system for optical fibers includes a laser source emitting ultraviolet light, a positioning system adjusting pose parameters of the optical fiber, laser source, or associated optical components, and a control system with processors. The control system directs the laser source and positioning system so that a first ultraviolet pulse alters reflectivity of a first fiber portion by a first amplitude, and a second pulse alters a second portion by a second amplitude. The first and second portions partially overlap, with a nonzero ratio between the first and second amplitudes in the overlap region. The present techniques improve manufacturing yield and sensor performance by controlling amplitude ratios between adjacent overlapping gratings to maintain overlap region reflectivity within acceptable bounds.
