A Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system to utilize heat from ambient air to defrost an outdoor coil in a defrost mode, instead of heat from a conditioned space, is disclosed. A return damper is positioned between the conditioned space and an inlet side of an indoor coil. A supply damper is positioned between an outlet side of the indoor coil and the conditioned space. A fresh air damper is positioned upstream of the inlet side of the indoor coil. An exhaust damper is positioned downstream of the outlet side of the indoor coil. In the defrost mode, the controller communicates electronic signals to the dampers to close the return damper and the supply damper, and to open the fresh air damper and the exhaust damper. The high-temperature refrigerant flows from a compressor to the outdoor coil and releases heat to defrost the outdoor coil.
