Abstract
Described herein are methods of forming aluminum alloy products that are formable and exhibit excellent surface properties. Methods include a break down hot rolling operation and a coil hot rolling operation conducted at an exit temperature less than the break down hot rolling operation. Methods include where the aluminum alloy product is not cooled between the first and coil hot rolling operations. The formed aluminum alloy products can form aerospace structural parts.
Claims20
A method of manufacturing an AA2xxx-series aluminum alloy product, the method comprising:
- casting an ingot of an AA2xxx-series aluminum alloy;
- homogenizing and/or preheating the cast ingot;
- break down hot rolling the ingot into an aluminum alloy sheet or plate having a break down hot rolling thickness at a break down hot rolling temperature;
- coil hot rolling the aluminum alloy sheet or plate into an aluminum alloy product having a coil hot rolling thickness at a coil hot rolling exit temperature, wherein the coil hot rolling exit temperature is less than the break down hot rolling temperature;
- and
- cutting the aluminum alloy product.
A method of manufacturing an AA2xxx-series aluminum alloy product, the method comprising:
- casting an ingot of an AA2xxx-series aluminum alloy;
- homogenizing and/or preheating the cast ingot;
- break down hot rolling the ingot into an aluminum alloy sheet or plate at a break down hot rolling temperature;
- coil hot rolling the aluminum alloy sheet or plate into a rolled aluminum alloy product to a coil hot rolling temperature, wherein the coil hot rolling temperature is less than the break down hot rolling temperature and is from about 190° C. to about 300° C.;
- and
- cutting the rolled aluminum alloy product into one or more aluminum alloy sheets.
