Modular storage box with smooth rail system

A modular storage box, comprising:

• a base;
• an intermediate portion having a first end and a second end, wherein the base is coupled to the intermediate portion at the first end, and wherein the intermediate portion comprises a plurality of faces;
• a lid coupled to the intermediate portion at the second end, wherein the lid encloses an interior volume of the modular storage box;
• and
• a rail system defined on at least one face of the plurality of faces, the rail system comprising:
• a plurality of rail insertion structures protruding outwards from the at least one face, wherein each rail insertion structure includes a respective base and a respective leading end thereby forming a respective rail insertion surface.

A storage system, comprising:

• a first modular storage box comprising:
• a base;
• an intermediate portion having a first end and a second end, wherein the base is coupled to the intermediate portion at the first end, and wherein the intermediate portion comprises a plurality of faces;
• a lid coupled to the intermediate portion at the second end, wherein the lid encloses an interior volume of the first modular storage box;
• and
• a first mounting system defined at the base, the first mounting system comprising a first base leading end orthogonally extending from a cleat insertion surface, wherein the first base leading end is parallel to the base;
• a second modular storage box comprising:
• a lid having a second mounting system, wherein the second mounting system comprises:
• a cleat structure defining a pocket extending longitudinally along a first portion of the lid with an opening oriented in a first orientation;
• and
• an engagement structure comprising a groove extending longitudinally along a second portion of the lid opposite the pocket,
• wherein the second mounting system is configured to receive the first base leading end of the first mounting system in the pocket to releasably couple the first modular storage box to the second modular storage box thereby defining a combined modular storage box.
