To provide: an antibacterial agent having excellent antibacterial properties; and a method for using a composition containing silicon nitride as an antibacterial agent having excellent antibacterial properties. The antibacterial agent contains silicon nitride as a main component and has a fluorine content of 900 mass ppm or less. In the method for using a composition containing silicon nitride as an antibacterial agent, there is used a composition that contains silicon nitride as a main component and has a fluorine content of 900 mass ppm or less.
