Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive, from a serving cell, control signaling indicating a candidate cell timing advance group (C-TAG) including multiple candidate cells. The UE may receive, from the serving cell, a downlink control message including a command to initiate access with a candidate cell of the multiple candidate cells of the C-TAG. The UE may transmit, to the candidate cell, a random access channel (RACH) message based on the command to initiate access with the candidate cell. The candidate cell may transmit, to the serving cell, a report including a timing advance (TA) based on the RACH message. The UE may obtain a common TA associated with the C-TAG based on transmitting the RACH message. The UE may communicate with at least one candidate cell of the multiple candidate cells of the C-TAG based on the common TA.
