Abstract
Presented herein are compositions and methods involving mitochondrial organelle transplantation for use in the treatment and/or prevention and/or amelioration of spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage (e.g., mitochondrial dysfunction).
Claims75
A method for autologous or allogeneic transplantation of mitochondria in a subject for treatment and/or prevention and/or amelioration of spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage, said method comprising administering to said subject a composition comprising mitochondria isolated from the subject or isolated from a donor other than the subject, wherein (i) the subject has engaged in spaceflight or is engaging in spaceflight at the time of administration of the composition and has or may have mitochondrial damage associated with said spaceflight, or (ii) wherein the subject is about to engage in spaceflight at the time of administration of the composition and said composition is administered to prevent or ameliorate spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage.
A kit comprising a donor mitochondria composition in a unit dosage effective to treat and/or ameliorate, and/or prevent spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage in a subject, said donor mitochondria composition comprising:
- mitochondria isolated from tissue of a donor;
- one or more buffering agents;
- a source of magnesium ion;
- a chelating agent;
- a sugar;
- an antioxidant;
- a cytoprotective agent that binds to calcium ion;
- and
- an agent that acts as a membrane stabilizer and/or oxygen radical scavenger and/or binder of Ca2+ and/or binder of free fatty acid.
A method of treating spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage, the method comprising:
- administering to a subject a composition comprising mitochondria, wherein the mitochondria is autologous or allogeneic mitochondria.
Use of autologous or allogeneic mitochondria for the treatment of spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage.
Use of autologous or allogeneic mitochondria for the treatment of spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage, wherein the autologous or allogeneic mitochondria is administered to a subject suffering from spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage.
Use of autologous or allogeneic mitochondria for the treatment of spaceflight-associated mitochondrial damage, wherein the autologous or allogeneic mitochondria is administered to a subject prior to engaging in a spaceflight.
