An alert system enables a person or object posing a potential hazard to proactively communicate its presence to nearby vehicles and computing systems. The system includes a computing device and an alert module integrated with or operatively coupled to the computing device. The alert module comprises an activating switch and a communicating portion configured to transmit hazard alert data, including the hazard's presence, location, and type, using any current or future wireless communication standard. The system may be implemented in hardware, software, or hybrid form and may be attachable, wearable, or vehicle integrated. By allowing hazards to announce their presence directly to driver-assist and autonomous vehicle systems, the invention provides early warnings that enhance situational awareness and reduce accident risk.
