Abstract
The systems and methods described relate to the concept that smart devices can be used to 1) sense various types of phenomena like sound, blue light exposure, RF and microwave radiation, and 2) in real-time analyze, report and/or control outputs (e.g., displays or speakers). The systems are configurable and use standard computing devices, such as wearable electronics, tablet computers, and mobile phones to measure various frequency bands across multiple points, allowing a single user to visualize and/or adjust environmental conditions.

A system comprising:
- a control source comprising a processor and a memory;
- at least one cluster comprising at least one computing device in electronic communication with the control source, each computing device including:
- (i) a sound sensing mechanism configured to sense a noise in an ambient audio environment;
- and (ii) a communication mechanism configured to transmit sensed noise data to the control source;
- at least one output device in electronic communication with the control source, the at least one output device comprising a speaker;
- wherein the memory includes computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
- receive the sensed noise data from the at least one computing device;
- identify and isolate one or more sound components from within the sensed noise, wherein each of the one or more sound components is associated with a sound type based on acoustic characteristics;
- determine whether any of the isolated sound components includes a characteristic outside a threshold associated with the sound type of that sound component;
- and
- in response to that determination, automatically alter an output of the at least one output device by applying audio signal processing to the isolated sound components according to their respective sound types, so as to selectively adjust at least one sound component of a first sound type while preserving or enhancing at least one other sound component of a second sound type.
A computer-implemented method comprising:
- providing a control source comprising a processor and a memory;
- operating at least one cluster comprising at least one computing device in electronic communication with the control source, each computing device including (i) a sound sensing mechanism and (ii) a communication mechanism;
- sensing, by the sound sensing mechanism, a noise in an ambient audio environment;
- transmitting, by the communication mechanism, data derived from the sensed noise to the control source;
- operating at least one output device in electronic communication with the control source, the at least one output device comprising a speaker;
- receiving, by the control source, the sensed noise data from the at least one computing device;
- identifying and isolating, by the control source, one or more sound components from within the sensed noise, wherein each of the one or more sound components is associated with a sound type based on acoustic characteristics;
- determining, by the control source, whether any of the isolated sound components includes a characteristic outside a threshold associated with the sound type of that sound component;
- and
- in response to determining that an isolated sound component includes the characteristic outside the predetermined threshold, automatically altering an output of the at least one output device by applying audio signal processing to the isolated sound components according to their respective sound types, so as to selectively adjust at least one sound component of a first sound type while preserving or enhancing at least one other sound component of a second sound type.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium including instructions for performing operations comprising:
- receiving sensed noise data from at least one computing device of at least one cluster of at least one computing device in electronic communication with a control source;
- identifying and isolating one or more sound components from within the sensed noise, wherein each of the one or more sound components is associated with a sound type based on acoustic characteristics;
- determining whether any of the isolated sound components includes a characteristic outside a predetermined threshold, wherein the predetermined threshold is based on a user-based sound perception setting associated with the sound type of that sound component;
- and
- in response to that determination, automatically altering an output of at least one output device in electronic communication with the control source, by applying audio signal processing to the isolated sound components according to their respective sound types, so as to selectively adjust at least one sound component of a first sound type while preserving or enhancing at least one other sound component of a second sound type.
