Abstract
Disclosed herein are compositions, tools and methods for the manufacture of construction materials, masonry, solid structures and compositions to facilitate dust control. More particularly, the disclosure is directed to the manufacture of bricks, masonry and other solid structures using small amount of aggregate material that is pre-loaded with spores and/or vegetative bacterial cells.
Claims20
A method of manufacturing a construction material, comprising:
- providing an aqueous medium that contains first microorganisms and second microorganisms, wherein the first microorganisms are calcium carbonate dissolving microorganisms and the second microorganisms are calcium carbonate forming microorganisms;
- contacting the aqueous medium with a carbonate mineral comprising magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), ferric carbonate (FeCO3), or dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) and particles of an aggregate material to dissolve the carbonate mineral into mineral ions and free carbon;
- and
- forming a mineral precipitate to bind the particles of the aggregate material together using the mineral ions and the free carbon, to thereby manufacture the construction material.
