Abstract
Lightweight porous ceramics for use in wastewater treatment, processes for their production and methods of their use are provided. The ceramics are especially suitable to replace the plastic beads that are currently used in biological aerated flooded filter systems (BAFFs) in wastewater treatment plants.
Claims15
A composition for production of a ceramic for wastewater treatment, the composition comprising the following components:
- A. clay comprising from about 0.1 to about 50 wt. % decomposable content, based on the total weight of the clay, wherein the decomposable content is decomposable during a firing process;
- wherein component A has a d90 of less than about 70 μm;
- B. inorganic microspheres, wherein the microspheres have a d90 of from about 270 μm to about 700 μm;
- and
- C. inorganic binder, optionally wherein component C has a d90 of from about 20 μm to about 100 μm;
- wherein component B is present in the composition in an amount of from about 20 to about 70 wt. %.
