Active Compression Devices, Methods Of Assembly And Methods Of Use

A bone fixation device comprising:

• a female member including a first end, a second end, an internal channel extending through an interior of the female member from the first end to the second end, a shaft region disposed at the second end, a threaded region disposed at the first end;
• a male member including a first end, a second end, a threaded portion disposed at the second end, a shaft portion disposed at the first end, wherein the shaft portion is designed to be received by the internal channel, and wherein the shaft portion comprises a plurality of grooves;
• at least one spring disposed in one of the plurality of grooves;
• and
• at least one locking device disposed between the female member and the male member, wherein the at least one locking device is designed to allow lateral movement of the male member in a first direction and present lateral movement of the male member in a second direction.

A method for providing bone fixation across a bone fracture site, comprising:

• engaging an insertion tool with a first member of a bone fixation device;
• stretching a bone fixation device between a first position and a second position, such that a second member is at least partially displaced from an internal channel of the first member and one or more springs disposed within the bone fixation device are compressed;
• inserting the bone fixation device across a fracture site of a patient;
• decoupling the insertion tool from the bone fixation device;
• and
• providing active compression across the fracture site.
