Intravenous catheter patients are required to visit a clinic at regular intervals to have their implanted vascular access device flushed for maintenance. This can be costly in both time and resources for both the patient and the clinic. Flushing the device using standard equipment requires specialized training to prevent over-pressurization of the device. Embodiments include a flushing system including a first syringe chamber for aspirating a blood flow, confirming vascular access, and confirming the device is occlusion free. Once confirmed, the device automatically unlocks a flushing syringe chamber to allow the patient to flush the device. The user can flush the device with little to no training and prevents over-pressurization of the implanted vascular access device.
