A placeholder device for marking the position of a removed item, such as a file or folder, within an organized storage system (i.e., filing cabinet/drawer) is disclosed. The device includes an elongated body configured for vertical insertion into the space vacated by the removed item and a head portion positioned at one end of the body to remain visible above adjacent items. The device further includes an attachment mechanism, such as a magnetic strip, enabling the device to be stored on an exterior surface of the storage system when not in use. The head portion includes a receiving surface for removably attachable overlay identification members bearing visual indicia, such as color patterns or writable surfaces, for aiding in item identification and organization.
