Wall gap fire block device and assembly

A wall assembly, comprising:

• a header track;
• a bottom track;
• a plurality of wall studs extending in a vertical direction between the bottom track and the header track;
• at least a first wallboard member and a second wallboard member supported by the plurality of wall studs and each having an outer facing surface, the first wallboard member having a first vertical edge facing a surface of the second wallboard member to define a vertically-extending deflection gap between the first wallboard member and the second wallboard member;
• and
• a control joint comprising a first layer and at least one fire-resistant material strip;
• wherein the first layer includes a gap fill portion comprising a V-shape comprising an apex of the V-shape, and at least one side portion extending along a respective one of the first or second wallboard members;
• wherein the gap fill portion is positioned in the deflection gap, the at least one fire-resistant material strip is coupled to the gap fill portion of the first layer, the at least one fire-resistant material strip located between the V-shape and at least one of the first vertical edge or the surface of the second wallboard member and located between the apex and the outer facing surface of the first or second wallboard member, the at least one fire-resistant material strip comprising an intumescent material that expands when exposed to elevated heat to seal the deflection gap.

A fire-rated component for a joint between a wall assembly and an adjacent structure, the fire-rated component comprising:

• an elongate U-shaped channel comprising a central portion, a first flange and a second flange, the first flange and the second flange extending from opposite edges of the central portion;
• a first foam strip attached to and extending lengthwise along the central portion;
• a second foam strip attached to and extending lengthwise along the central portion at a spaced location from the first foam strip;
• wherein at least a portion of the first flange comprises an intumescent fire-resistant material;
• wherein at least a portion of the second flange comprises an intumescent fire-resistant material;
• wherein, in use, the elongate U-shaped channel is positioned within the joint such that each of the first foam strip and the second foam strip contacts and conforms to the adjacent structure and each of the wall board members rests against a respective one of the intumescent fire-resistant material of the first flange and the second flange on each side of the wall assembly such that a fire-rated seal is created between the adjacent structure and the wall assembly.
