Abstract
There is provided a vegetable-based lipid composition comprising high levels of at least three different long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (typically as fatty acid esters). The compositions typically contain DHA as the principal long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid. The composition is obtainable from a single source by conventional processing methods, and has improved stability properties.
Claims18
A lipid composition comprising:
- (i) a first polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in an amount of from 50% to 85% by weight of the total fatty acid content of the composition, wherein the first PUFA has at least 20 carbons and at least 5 unsaturations in its carbon chain;
- (ii) α-linolenic acid (ALA, C18:3n-3) in an amount of from 10% to 90% by weight of the first PUFA;
- and
- (iii) a third PUFA in an amount of from 10% to 70% by weight of the ALA, wherein the third PUFA is an omega-3 PUFA;
- wherein the total amount of all other fatty acids in the composition is up to 20% by weight of the total fatty acid content of the composition, and wherein each of the other fatty acids, the ALA, the first, and the third PUFAs is independently provided in the form of a fatty acid ethyl ester, a salt of a fatty acid ethyl ester, a triglyceride, or a salt of a triglyceride, and
- wherein at least 70% by weight of the lipids in the composition are obtained from one or more plants.
