Enhanced routing performance

A system comprising:

• a communication network;
• and
• a communication device comprising a communication port coupled with the communication network and a control circuit controlling operation of the communication device, wherein the control circuit causes the communication device to:
• identify a plurality of paths through the communication network from the communication port to a first set of destination nodes,
• determine a congestion level for each path of the plurality of paths through the communication network to the first set of destination nodes,
• identify a first set of available paths from the plurality of paths through the communication network to the first set of destination nodes based on the determined congestion level for each path, and
• route data packets to the first set of destination nodes over the identified first set of paths using a first routing method.

A method for routing of data packets in a communication device, the method comprising:

• identifying, by a processor of the communication device, a plurality of paths through the network from the communication port to one or more destination nodes of the network;
• determining, by the processor of the communication device, a congestion level for each path of the plurality of paths through the network;
• identifying, by the processor of the communication device, a set of available paths from the plurality of paths through the network to each of the one or more destination nodes based on the determined congestion level for each path;
• routing, by the processor of the communication device, data packets to the one or more destination nodes over the identified set of paths using a first routing method;
• and
• routing, by the processor of the communication device, data packets to the one or more destination nodes over the plurality of paths using a second routing method in response to a selected path of the identified set of paths becoming congested.
