Abstract
Sensors and related methods for detecting chemicals, gases and molecules using a plurality of electrodes, a liquid mucus based electrolyte and a separator to hold the liquid electrolyte and wet the surface of the first electrode and wet the surface of the second electrode with the liquid electrolyte. One or more electrodes may include a metallophthalocyanine or a metalloporphyrin or a derivative thereof or an electrode may be in electrical contact with a metallophthalocyanine or a metalloporphyrin.

A kit comprising:
- a disposable portion comprising an electrochemical sensing element, a separator coupled to the electrochemical sensing element, and an electrical contact coupled to the electrochemical sensing element, wherein the separator comprises a portion extending beyond the electrochemical sensing element to receive a liquid electrolyte;
- a re-usable portion comprising a circuit to couple to the electrochemical sensing element via the electrical contact;
- and
- an electrolyte reservoir to deliver the retain and deliver the liquid electrolyte, the liquid electrolyte comprising at least one of a natural mucus and a synthetic mucus.
A disposable sensor comprising:
- an electrochemical sensing element, an electrical contact coupled to the electrochemical sensing element, and a separator coupled to the electrochemical sensing element, wherein the separator comprises a portion extending beyond the electrochemical sensing element to receive a liquid electrolyte comprising at least one of a natural mucus and a synthetic mucus;
- a passage configured to direct a gas to be tested across the surface of the electrochemical sensing element;
- and
- wherein the electrochemical sensing element, electrical contact, and separator are arranged in a stacked layer configuration with the separator between the electrochemical sensing element and the electrical contact.
A method of using a kit, comprising:
- providing a disposable portion comprising a sensor, wherein the sensor comprises at least one electrode and a separator, and further wherein the disposable portion comprises a paper extension;
- providing a re-usable portion comprising a circuit;
- electronically coupling the circuit to the at least one electrode of the sensor;
- providing an electrolyte reservoir comprising a liquid electrolyte comprising at least one of a natural mucus and a synthetic mucus;
- and
- coupling the paper extension of the disposable portion to the electrolyte reservoir.
