The present invention is directed towards systems and methods for converting spent nuclear fuel (SNF) to fluoride salt fuel for use in a molten salt reactor. By utilizing nitrogen trifluoride, the entire content of a SNF solution may be fluorinated and oxidized, such that it is fit for inclusion in a molten salt reactor system. This process avoids drawbacks of traditional reprocessing since separation is avoided. The present invention utilizes a fuel conversion setup to maintain precise thermal conditions to cause fluorination of the constituents of the SNF while minimizing or avoiding volatilization.
