Breakaway threaded fasteners

A breakaway threaded fastener, comprising:

• a stud having a wall with an upper surface at a first end and an external thread;
• a pin having a top end that extends above the upper surface of the stud;
• and
• a cap having a closed end, an open end, an internal thread, and an inner surface at the closed end,
• the cap and stud being threadably engaged to one another via the internal and external threads so that the pin passes through the open end of the cap with the top end abutting the inner surface of the cap with a gap remaining between the upper surface of the wall and the inner surface of the cap, and
• wherein the gap, the internal threads, and the external threads are configured to limit an amount of linear displacement, which imparts a tension on the stud, before the inner surface of the cap contacts the upper surface of the wall, which imparts a shear on the stud, so that the stud does not break away due to only the tension but rather breaks away under both the tension and the shear.
