A method of reducing A dose of a pain killer prescribed to a subject in need thereof, reducing addiction to a pain killer in a subject in need thereof, or reducing the risk of addiction to a pain killer in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising:
- administering to the subject one or more drug delivery particles, or a drug delivery scaffold, comprising a polymer matrix and an anesthetic agent selected from the group consisting of benzocaine, chloroprocaine, cocaine, cyclomethycaine, dimethocaine, piperocaine, propoxycaine, procaine, proparacaine, tetracaine, articaine, bupivacaine, cinchocaine, etidocaine, levobupivacaine, lidocaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine, ropivacaine, and trimecaine,
- wherein after administration the polymer matrix is gradually bioeroded and the anesthetic agent is sustainably released.
