Abstract
A sub-hogel configuration for a high-definition light field display that can be used in the design of optical device and three-dimensional light field display technology. Three-dimensional holographic pixels (hogels) composed of monochromatic sub-hogels and a designed metasurface act as a directional optical element for a light field display. The sub-hogel structure design and method is suited for an achromatic metasurface to provide directional pixels for multiple view light field colored displays.

A method for designing a partitioned optical metasurface comprising:
- defining a phase function for the metasurface;
- specifying a material for nanostructures in the metasurface;
- determining a configuration such that the metasurface is partitioned into a plurality of regions;
- determining nanostructure parameters for each region;
- generating a transmission map for the metasurface based on the nanostructure parameters;
- designing each region based on the nanostructure parameters and the transmission map to achieve the phase function, each region designed to direct light of a specific wavelength range;
- calculating performance metrics for the designed metasurface;
- and
- generating an output metasurface design for the metasurface.
21-25. (canceled)
A method for designing a partitioned optical metasurface for a light field display comprising:
- partitioning the metasurface into a plurality of color regions corresponding to monochromatic sub-hogels;
- determining nanostructure parameters for each color region based on a specific optical bandwidth;
- generating transmission maps for each color region using electromagnetic simulations;
- designing each color region to achieve a predetermined phase function;
- and
- optimizing the design to maximize figures of merit for the metasurface.
