Break glass feature without user interaction

A client device comprising:

• a processor;
• one or more storage devices comprising an operating system, a standard bootloader and, a custom bootloader, the one or more storage devices configured to store a boot order in which instructions provided by the custom bootloader supersede instructions provided by the standard bootloader and computer readable instructions, which, when executed by the processor cause the processor to:
• reboot the client device;
• increment a reboot counter;
• determine whether the reboot counter exceeds a predetermined threshold;
• provided the reboot counter exceeds the predetermined threshold, a bootable image stored on the client device is retrieved or a secure channel to the server is established and a desirable playbook is obtained from the server;
• and
• reboot the client device using either the bootable image or the desirable playbook.

A start-up method on a client device, the client device including a processor and one or more storage devices containing an operating system, a standard bootloader and a custom bootloader, the one or more storage devices being configured to store a boot order in which instructions provided by the custom bootloader supersede instructions provided by the standard bootloader, the method comprising:

• rebooting the client device;
• incrementing a reboot counter;
• determining whether the reboot counter exceeds a predetermined threshold;
• wherein, when the reboot counter exceeds the predetermined threshold, one of:
• retrieving a bootable image stored on the client device, or
• establishing a secure channel with a server and obtaining a desirable playbook from the server;
• and
• rebooting the client device using either the bootable image or the desirable playbook.
