A base station (BS) includes an antenna array that has several antenna ports. The BS selects a visibility region (VR) for a user equipment (UE). The BS define several unique non-overlapping VRs. Each VR includes a different non-overlapping subset of the antenna ports of the BS. The BS transmits, to the UE, a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) configuration that includes several CSI-RS resource sets. Each CSI-RS resource set identifies one or more resources for one of the VRs. The BS receives a set of one or more channel quality measurement reports from the UE. Each channel quality measurement report corresponds to a CSI-RS resource set of the several CSI-RS resource sets. The BS selects VR for the UE based on the set of channel quality measurement reports. The selected VR includes one or more VRs of the several VRs.
