Abstract
Active metasurface antennas and methods for using the same are disclosed. In some embodiments, the metasurface has a plurality of tunable radiating antenna elements, and each tunable radiating antenna element of the tunable radiating antenna elements comprises a tuning element configured to tune each tunable radiating antenna element and an amplifier coupled in parallel to the tuning element.

An antenna comprising:
- a metasurface having radiating antenna elements and amplifiers configured to amplify signals for the radiating antenna elements, wherein, for each of the radiating antenna elements, the metasurface includes:
- at least one of:
- a low noise amplifier (LNA) coupled to said each radiating antenna element and configured to amplify signals after reception by to said each radiating antenna element, and
- a power amplifier (PA) coupled to said each radiating antenna element and configured to amplify signals for transmission from said each radiating antenna element;
- a tunable coupler coupled to the said each radiating antenna element using a wire cage, the coupler including
- a tunable slot to couple a feed wave to said each radiating antenna element, and
- a tuning element coupled to the tunable slot to tune said tunable slot.

An antenna comprising:
- a metasurface having radiating antenna elements and amplifiers configured to amplify signals for the radiating antenna elements, wherein, for each of the radiating antenna elements, the metasurface includes:
- a patch antenna;
- at least one of:
- a low noise amplifier (LNA) coupled to the patch antenna and configured to amplify signals after reception by the patch antenna, and
- a power amplifier (PA) coupled to the patch antenna and configured to amplify signals for transmission by the patch antenna;
- a tunable coupler coupled to the patch antenna using a wire cage, the coupler including
- a tunable slot to couple a feed wave to said each radiating antenna element, and
- a tuning element coupled to the tunable slot to tune said tunable slot;
- and
- a waveguide coupled to the metasurface.
