Abstract
A method of refueling a flow battery utilizing the existing system's power source and pumps to pump electrolyte into and out of the system to allow for refueling and routine maintenance and repairs. The flow battery includes a diverter to an external source of electrolyte as well as a tank seal located at the base of either charged tank that is operable to prevent electrolyte from exiting the tanks during refueling operations. The flow battery may also include a liquid detector operable to measure the amount of electrolyte being deposited into the tanks during refueling.
Claims6
A method of refueling a flow battery comprising the steps of:
- providing a flow battery comprising:
- a tank seal located at the base of either a positively charged tank or a negatively charged tank, the tank seal being operable to prevent flow of an electrolyte from exiting the positively charged tank or the negatively charged tank, and
- a diverter configured to allow the electrolyte into the flow battery when in the open position and prevent electrolyte from exiting the flow battery when in the closed position,
- providing a drainage tube fluidly connected to the diverter and an external electrolyte source, activating the tank seal,
- placing the diverter in the open position;
- and
- pumping the electrolyte from the external electrolyte source into the flow battery through the drainage tube and the diverter.
