Abstract
A guide for use in cutting a bone is disclosed. The guide includes a bone contacting surface contoured to conformably mate with a first bone surface when placed against the first bone surface, and a guide surface that is spaced apart from the bone contacting surface. At least one prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information is provided on the guide surface that corresponds to the desired depth of cut being made using the guide.
Claims35
A guide for use in cutting a bone, the bone having a first bone surface and a second bone surface with a varying bone depth defined therebetween, the guide comprising:
- a surface configured for contacting bone comprising a contour that is complementary to a contour of the first bone surface such that the bone contacting surface conformably mates with the first bone surface when placed against the first bone surface;
- a guide surface spaced apart from the bone contacting surface and provided thereon with prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information in correspondence with the varying bone depth;
- a primary aperture extending through the guide from the guide surface toward the second bone surface when the guide is placed on the bone against the first bone surface, the primary aperture configured to receive and guide a cutting tool;
- and at least one additional guide hole distinct from the primary aperture and configured to receive the cutting tool to form a depth-controlled bone preparation at a location different from a bone preparation formed via the primary aperture;
- wherein the primary aperture divides the guide surface into first and second sections, and the guide surface and the primary aperture are cooperatively configured such that a depth stop on the cutting tool contacts the guide surface at an edge region of the primary aperture to limit a depth of the cutting tool as the cutting tool is translated along the primary aperture in accordance with the prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information.
A kit for use in removing a portion of a bone, the bone having a first bone surface and a second bone surface with a varying bone depth therebetween, the kit comprising:
- a guide including a bone contacting surface complementary to the first bone surface, a guide surface spaced apart from the bone contacting surface and provided thereon with prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information in correspondence with the varying bone depth, and at least one aperture extending through the guide from the guide surface toward the second bone surface when the guide is placed on the bone against the first bone surface;
- a burr comprising an elongated body, a cutting tip at a first end of the elongated body, and a depth stop shoulder disposed between the cutting tip and a second end of the elongated body, the depth stop shoulder being wider than the at least one aperture to limit depth of insertion of the cutting tip into the bone when the burr is guided by the at least one aperture;
- a flat oscillating saw blade comprising a blade body and a protruding depth stop located on the blade body and configured to interfere with the at least one aperture to limit a cutting depth;
- and
- a chisel having a tip and a plurality of depth markings disposed along the chisel at graduated intervals from the tip;
- and a bone removal screw having a leading tip and a plurality of depth markings disposed along the screw at graduated intervals from the leading tip, wherein the depth markings on the bone removal screw are coordinated to the depth markings on the chisel with matching interval graduations measured from the respective tips.
A method for cutting a bone using a single guide fixation, the bone having a first bone surface and a second bone surface with a varying bone depth therebetween, the method comprising:
- placing a patient-specific guide against the first bone surface, the guide including a bone contacting surface complementary to the first bone surface, a guide surface spaced apart from the bone contacting surface and provided thereon with prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information in correspondence with the varying bone depth, a primary aperture extending from the guide surface toward the second bone surface when the guide is placed on the bone, and at least one additional guide hole;
- inserting a cutting tool into the primary aperture and cutting into the bone while limiting depth of the cutting tool based on the prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information corresponding to locations along the primary aperture;
- and
- inserting the cutting tool into the at least one additional guide hole and cutting into the bone to form a blind hole or sculpted feature while limiting depth of the cutting tool based on the prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information corresponding to the location of the at least one additional guide hole.
A guide for use in cutting a bone, the bone having a first bone surface and a second bone surface with a varying bone depth therebetween, the guide comprising:
- a surface configured to contact a bone comprising a contour complementary to the first bone surface;
- a guide surface spaced apart from the bone contacting surface and provided thereon with prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information in correspondence with the varying bone depth;
- and
- an aperture extending through the guide from the guide surface toward the second bone surface when the guide is placed on the bone, the aperture being oriented at a non-orthogonal angle relative to the first bone surface and configured to receive and guide a cutting tool along the non-orthogonal angle, the prescribed patient-specific depth of cut information varying along a length of the aperture corresponding to the non-orthogonal angle.
A guide for use in placing fixation pins while cutting a bone, the bone having a first bone surface and a second bone surface with a varying bone depth therebetween, the guide comprising:
- a surface configured for contacting a bone comprising a contour complementary to the first bone surface;
- a guide surface spaced apart from the bone contacting surface;
- at least one aperture extending from the guide surface toward the second bone surface when the guide is placed on the bone, the at least one aperture configured to receive and guide a cutting tool;
- and
- a plurality of fixation pin holes configured to guide respective fixation pins into the bone, wherein the fixation pin holes are configured such that pin placement depth is referenced from the guide surface, and wherein the fixation pins include depth control features comprising either a physical depth stop or circumferential depth markings to position distal tips of the fixation pins at a patient-specific depth relative to a far cortical edge when the guide is fixed to the bone.
