A method for extracting critical minerals from organic-rich black shale having at least 0.5 wt % total organic carbon is disclosed. The sequential leaching process comprises water washing, followed by treatment with magnesium chloride solution, a first acid (such as acetic acid) to dissolve carbonates, a reducing agent solution containing hydroxylamine hydrochloride to target Fe—Mn oxyhydroxides, and mineral acid treatment (such as nitric acid) to extract from pyrite phases. The method particularly targets lithium extraction, recovering at least 20% of total lithium content from pyrite-associated phases. The method is most effective for shales with high organic carbon content (≥5 wt %) and pyrite content (≥2.5 wt %). Other extractable critical minerals include cobalt, gallium, germanium, hafnium, indium, magnesium, manganese, nickel, niobium, rubidium, tantalum, tellurium, and zinc.
