Abstract
The present invention relates to an orthopaedic implant and system for fixation of bones and a method for the use of the orthopaedic implant and system. The orthopaedic system finds utility for fixation of bones such as fractures of the tibia, although it may be used in any suitable long bone.
Claims18
An orthopaedic implant comprising:
- (a) a body for connecting to an intramedullary nail, wherein said body has a proximal end and a distal end, wherein said proximal end and said distal end define a first longitudinal axis therebetween;
- (b) a first aperture at said proximal end of said body for receiving an interlocking screw;
- and
- (c) securing means at said distal end of said body for securing said orthopaedic implant to said intramedullary nail;
- wherein said orthopaedic implant comprises a series of slits on said body, wherein each pair of slits defines a series of deformable leaf layers comprising at least a first leaf layer, a second leaf layer and subsequent leaf layers, wherein each of said first leaf layer, said second leaf layer and said subsequent leaf layers is deformable between a first position, a second position and an actuating position;
- and
- wherein, in said first position, there is no engagement between said leaf layers;
- in said second position, there is engagement between said leaf layers when a first force is applied, which deforms a leaf layer from said first position to said second position;
- and, in said actuating position, there is engagement between said leaf layers and movement of said first leaf layer, said second leaf layer and/or said subsequent leaf layers when a second force is applied, which deforms a leaf layer from said second position to said actuating position.
