Abstract
An electrolyte for a rechargeable lithium battery of exemplary embodiments includes: an organic solvent; a lithium salt; and a bisphosphate-based additive, thereby providing an electrolyte for a rechargeable lithium battery capable of imparting improved flame retardant characteristics and cell performance, for example, high-temperature storage characteristics and lifespan characteristics, and a rechargeable lithium battery including the same.

An electrolyte for a rechargeable lithium battery comprising:
- an additive which comprises a compound represented by Formula 1 below;
- an organic solvent;
- and
- a lithium salt:
- (in Formula 1, Ar1 to Ar4 are the same as or different from each other, and are each independently a substituted or unsubstituted C6 to C18 aryl group, and L is a substituted or unsubstituted C1 to C12 alkylene group, a substituted or unsubstituted C3 to C12 cycloalkylene group, a substituted or unsubstituted C6 to C12 arylene group, or a substituted or unsubstituted C3 to C12 heteroarylene group).
