Robotic surgical system and method

A system for performing a surgical procedure using a multi-axis robot, the system comprising:

• a medical imaging device configured to create a medical image and store the medical image in a computer, the stored medical image containing a portion of the patient and a plurality of radiopaque fiducial points;
• a multi-axis robot configured to be positioned adjacent to the patient, the robot comprising:
• a plurality of interconnected arms movable relative to one another;
• and
• an end effector attached to the interconnected arms and having a tool holder configured to releasably retain at least one surgical tool, wherein the computer is configured to control movement of the arms;
• an ultrasound (US) probe configured to generate an US image of at least a portion of the patient during surgery and store the US image in the computer;
• a monitor coupled to the computer and configured to display the medical image and the US image.

A system for performing a surgical procedure using a multi-axis robot, the system comprising:

• a medical imaging device configured to create a medical image and store the medical image in a computer, the stored medical image containing a portion of the patient and a plurality of radiopaque fiducial points;
• a multi-axis robot configured to be positioned adjacent the patient, the robot comprising:
• a plurality of interconnected arms movable relative to one another;
• and
• an end effector attached to the interconnected arms and having a tool holder configured to releasably retain at least one surgical tool, wherein the computer is configured to control movement of the arms;
• an ultrasound (US) probe configured to generate an US image of at least a portion of the patient during surgery and store the US image in the computer;
• a monitor coupled to the computer and configured to display the overlaid medical and US images, the overlaid medical and US images comprising at least a portion of a surgical sight of the patient and the fiducial points, and the computer being configured to adjust the position of the medical image to the US image using the fiducial points for alignment with respect to each other.
