A method of preparing a composition, comprising:

combining a purified erythrocruorin with 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, 5-formyltetrahydrofolate, or 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and 5-formyltetrahydrofolate, and optionally 5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobiopterin.
