Flexible metadata regions for a memory device

A method, comprising:

• transmitting, by a memory controller of a host device to a memory I/O module of a memory device via a channel, a first message comprising instructions to configure a first portion of a memory array of the memory device for storage of data and metadata and to configure a second portion of the memory array of the memory device for storage of only data, wherein the instructions comprise instructions to store, in the first register, a first indication that the first portion of the memory array is configured for storage of data and metadata and a second indication that the second portion of the memory array is configured for storage of only data;
• receiving, by the memory I/O module via the channel, the first message;
• and
• configuring, by the memory device, the memory array in accordance with the first message, wherein configuring the memory array in accordance with the received message comprises setting a first bit of the first register to a first value in response to the instructions to store, in the first register, the first indication to configure a first plurality of corresponding rows of a plurality of banks of the memory array for storage of data and metadata and setting a second bit of the first register to a second value in response to the instructions to store, in the first register, the second indication to configure a second plurality of corresponding rows of the plurality of banks of the memory array for storage of only data.

A system, comprising:

• a memory device;
• and
• a host device, coupled to the memory device via a channel,
• the system configured to perform operations comprising:
• transmitting, by the host device to the memory device via the channel, a first message comprising instructions to configure a first portion of a memory array of the memory device for storage of data and metadata and to configure a second portion of the memory array for storage of only data, wherein the instructions comprise instructions to store, in a first register of the memory device, a first indication that the first portion of the memory array is configured for storage of data and metadata and a second indication that the second portion of the memory array is configured for storage of only data;
• receiving, memory device, the first message;
• and
• configuring, by the memory device, the memory array in accordance with the first message, wherein configuring the memory array in accordance with the received message comprises setting a first bit of the first register to a first value in response to the instructions to store, in the first register, the first indication to configure a first plurality of corresponding rows of a plurality of banks of the memory array for storage of data and metadata and setting a second bit of the first register to a second value in response to the instructions to store, in the first register, the second indication to configure a second plurality of corresponding rows of the plurality of banks of the memory array for storage of only data.
